The imaginary time Path Integral and non-time-reversal-invariant- saddle points of the Euclidean Action

چکیده
We discuss new bounce-like (but non-time-reversal-invariant-) solutions to Euclidean equations of motion, which we dub boomerons. In the Euclidean path integral approach to quantum theories, boomerons make an imaginary contribution to the vacuum energy. The fake vacuum instabilty can be removed by cancelling boomeron contributions against contributions from time reversed boomerons (anti-boomerons). The cancellation rests on a sign choice whose significance is not completely understood in the path integral method. e-mail address: [email protected]

We review various ways to express the partition function of the single-band Hubard model as a path integral. The emphasis is made on the derivation of the action in the integrand of the path integral and the results obtained from this approach are discussed only briefly. Since the single-band Hubbard model is a pure fermionic model on the lattice and its Hamiltonian is a polynomial in creat...
متن کاملNumerical study of metastability due to tunneling: The quantum string method
We generalize the string method, originally designed for the study of thermally activated rare events, to the calculation of quantum tunneling rates. This generalization is based on the formal analogy between quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics in the path-integral formalism. The quantum string method first locates the minimal action path (MAP), which is a smooth curve connecting two mi...
متن کاملA New Approach to Axial Vector Model Calculations
We consider the one-loop effective action due to a spinor loop coupled to an abelian vector and axial vector field background. After rewriting this effective action in terms of an auxiliary non-abelian gauge connection, we use the De Witt expansion to analyze both its anomalous and non-anomalous content. The same transformation allows us to obtain a novel worldline path integral representation ...
متن کاملGravitational Instantons Derived from Minimal Surfaces
The interest in instantons originates from the discovery of finite-action solutions of the classical Yang-Mills equations, instantons [1]-[3], which are localized in imaginary time. They provide the dominant contribution to the path-integral in the quantization of the Yang-Mills fields. The expectation that their gravitational counterparts should play a similar role in the path-integral approac...
